How this calculator works

Add a row for every state you drove in during the quarter, with the miles driven there. Gallons consumed per state is calculated from your average fleet MPG. If you also log gallons purchased in that state, the tool shows net taxable gallons: positive means you burned more fuel there than you bought, negative means you bought more than you burned.

Tax rates are not built in because they are set per jurisdiction and change quarterly. If you want a dollar estimate, type in the rate you actually paid or your jurisdiction's current rate for that row.

Frequently asked questions

What is IFTA?

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is how most US states and Canadian provinces share fuel tax collected from carriers that operate across state lines. Carriers file a quarterly return reporting miles driven and fuel purchased in each jurisdiction.

How is net taxable gallons calculated?

For each state: gallons consumed = miles driven in that state divided by your fleet's average MPG. Net taxable gallons = gallons consumed minus gallons purchased in that state. A positive number means you owe tax there; a negative number is typically a credit.

Does this calculator use current IFTA tax rates?

No. IFTA tax rates are set per jurisdiction and change every quarter, so this tool does not hardcode them. Enter your own current rate per state (from your IFTA quarterly rate matrix) if you want a dollar estimate, or use the tool for mileage and gallons only.

Does this replace my IFTA filing?

No. This is a planning and record-keeping aid only. File your official IFTA return using your base jurisdiction's forms and current rates.
