How deadhead impact is calculated
- Deadhead % = deadhead miles ÷ total miles × 100
- Quoted rate = revenue ÷ loaded miles
- Effective rate = revenue ÷ total miles (loaded + deadhead)
- Lost to deadhead = quoted rate − effective rate, per mile
A load that pays $3.00 a loaded mile can drop well below $2.50 once 80 empty miles are added in. Always compare loads on effective rate, not the quoted rate alone.
