What is the difference between per-mile and percentage pay?
Per-mile pay is a fixed rate for every mile driven, so it does not change with freight rates. Percentage pay is a share of what the load actually earns, so it moves with the market: higher in strong freight, lower when rates soften.
How much do truck drivers make per year?
It depends heavily on pay model, miles or loads run, and weeks worked. Use your own numbers above rather than a national average, since regional pay, equipment type and experience all change the figure.
Is percentage pay or per-mile pay better?
Neither is universally better. Percentage pay can pay more when freight rates are strong and less when they are weak; per-mile pay is steadier. Compare both against your own typical gross revenue and miles.
