Box Truck Dispatch: How to Find Loads and What It Really Costs
Quick answer

How do box truck owner-operators find loads?

Box truck owner-operators find loads through load boards, direct broker relationships and dispatch services. A 26 ft diesel box truck typically gets about 8.5-11 mpg. Texas Solutions dispatches box trucks and straight trucks for 8% of weekly gross, OTR, with no flat rate.

Box trucks are one of the easiest ways into owner-operator trucking, but the freight works differently from semi loads: smaller, more frequent, and often with tighter delivery windows. Here is how to keep a box truck loaded and what it costs to run.

Where box truck loads come from

  • Load boards. The biggest source of spot freight, and the most competitive.
  • Direct broker relationships. Brokers who know your truck, liftgate and service will call you first.
  • Dispatch services. A dispatcher searches the boards, calls brokers and negotiates for you, so your time goes into driving.

Match loads to your box length, liftgate and payload before you book, and ask about lumper, appointment and detention terms.

Box truck fuel cost

A 26 ft diesel box truck typically gets about 11 mpg empty and 8.5 mpg fully loaded. At $6.00 a gallon that is roughly $0.55-$0.70 per mile in diesel. Box truck rates per mile run about $1.80-$3.20 on our rate guide, so fuel is a big share of every load.

Check your own numbers with the box truck fuel calculator. Running a gasoline box truck? Pick gasoline in the calculator for the state gas price and type your own mpg.

Box truck load profitability: a worked example

Take a 320-mile box truck load paying $832 ($2.60 a loaded mile, one of the example lanes on our box truck page), with 40 empty miles to the pickup. Say your all-in cost is $1.40 a mile including your own pay, and you pay 8% dispatch and 3% factoring.

  • Total miles: 360, so mileage cost is 360 x $1.40 = $504
  • Revenue after fees: $832 x 0.89 = $740.48
  • Estimated profit: about $236, an effective rate of $2.31 per mile driven
  • Break-even linehaul: $504 / 0.89 = about $566 ($1.77 per loaded mile). For a $250 profit you would need about $847 ($2.65 per loaded mile)

These are example figures, not a quote. Work out your own cost per mile with the cost per mile calculator, then run each load through the load profitability calculator, which includes dispatch and factoring fees and the rate you need.

What box truck dispatch costs

Texas Solutions charges 8% of weekly gross for OTR box trucks and straight trucks. On a hypothetical weekly gross of $7,000-$9,000 that is about $560-$720 a week, with no flat rate, no setup fee and no monthly subscription.

Box truck dispatch costs a higher percentage than semi dispatch (5%) because each dollar of box truck gross takes more loads, more broker setups and more paperwork.
