Quick answer

What does the Maintenance Budget Calculator do?

Free truck maintenance budget calculator: estimate a yearly and monthly repair reserve based on your truck's age and annual mileage.

How the reserve is estimated

This uses simple age-based rule-of-thumb rates as a starting point, editable if you have your own numbers:

  • 0-2 years: about $0.12 per mile
  • 3-5 years: about $0.18 per mile
  • 6-8 years: about $0.25 per mile
  • 9+ years: about $0.35 per mile

Yearly reserve = rate per mile × annual miles. These are rough planning figures, not a quote or a guarantee; your own repair history is always the better number once you have a few years of it.

Worked example

A 3-year-old truck running 110,000 miles a year uses the $0.18 a mile bracket.

  • Yearly reserve = $0.18 × 110,000 = $19,800
  • Monthly = $1,650; weekly = $381

Frequently asked questions

How much should I budget for truck maintenance?

As a rough rule of thumb, older trucks cost more per mile to maintain. This calculator uses editable age brackets as a starting point; once you have your own repair history, use your own cost per mile instead.

Why does maintenance cost more on an older truck?

Wear parts, hoses, seals and major components (engine, transmission, aftertreatment) become more likely to need repair as a truck ages and accumulates miles, so the average cost per mile for upkeep tends to rise.

Should I set aside money for maintenance every month?

Many owner-operators keep a maintenance reserve so a large repair does not become a cash-flow crisis. Setting aside a per-mile or monthly amount, even a rough estimate, is better than budgeting nothing.
