Freight Class Calculator

A density-based estimate of NMFC freight class from your shipment's dimensions and weight.

Estimate only. Actual NMFC freight class depends on the specific commodity's NMFC item number, packaging, stowability and liability, not density alone. Confirm your class with your carrier or an official NMFC lookup before booking; getting it wrong can mean reclassification fees.
Want loads that beat these numbers?

A Texas Solutions dispatcher negotiates every rate and plans lanes around your cost per mile. Semi trucks 5%, hotshots 7%, box trucks 8% of weekly gross. You approve every load.

Quick answer

What does the Freight Class Calculator do?

Free freight class calculator: estimate NMFC freight class from length, width, height and weight using the standard density table. Estimate only, confirm with your carrier.

The density table used

Density (PCF)Estimated class
50 and over50
35 to under 5055
30 to under 3560
22.5 to under 3065
15 to under 22.570
12 to under 1577.5
10 to under 1285
8 to under 1092.5
6 to under 8100
4 to under 6125
2 to under 4150
1 to under 2175
under 1250+

This is the widely used general density-to-class guideline. Some commodities carry their own NMFC item number regardless of density (electronics, hazardous materials, automotive parts and more), which overrides a pure density estimate. When in doubt, ask your carrier or dispatcher.

Worked example

One pallet measures 48 × 40 × 48 inches and weighs 500 lbs.

  • Cubic feet = 48 × 40 × 48 ÷ 1,728 = 53.3
  • Density = 500 ÷ 53.3 = 9.4 lbs per cubic foot
  • Estimated class: 92.5 (8 to under 10 PCF)

Frequently asked questions

How is freight class determined?

Officially, freight class comes from the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC), which assigns a specific item number to each commodity based on density, stowability, handling and liability. Density-based calculators like this one give a reasonable estimate for commodities without unusual handling or liability factors.

What is freight density and how is it calculated?

Density is weight divided by volume, in pounds per cubic foot (PCF). Cubic feet = (length × width × height in inches) ÷ 1728. Density = total weight ÷ total cubic feet.

Why did my carrier reclassify my shipment?

Carriers may reclassify a shipment if the class booked does not match the commodity's actual NMFC item, or if the measured density does not match what was declared. Confirming the correct class before booking avoids reclassification fees.
