Deadhead Miles Calculator
The rate a broker quotes is per loaded mile. Here is what you actually earn once deadhead is counted.
Loaded vs. deadhead
Deadhead impact
A Texas Solutions dispatcher negotiates every rate and plans lanes around your cost per mile. Semi trucks 5%, hotshots 7%, box trucks 8% of weekly gross. You approve every load.

Free deadhead miles calculator: see your deadhead percentage and effective rate per mile once empty miles are counted against a load's revenue.
How deadhead impact is calculated
- Deadhead % = deadhead miles ÷ total miles × 100
- Quoted rate = revenue ÷ loaded miles
- Effective rate = revenue ÷ total miles (loaded + deadhead)
- Lost to deadhead = quoted rate − effective rate, per mile
A load that pays $3.00 a loaded mile can drop well below $2.50 once 80 empty miles are added in. Always compare loads on effective rate, not the quoted rate alone.
A load pays $1,900 for 550 loaded miles, and the truck drives 80 empty miles to reach it.
- Total miles = 630; deadhead = 80 ÷ 630 = 12.7%
- Quoted rate = $1,900 ÷ 550 = $3.45 per loaded mile
- Effective rate = $1,900 ÷ 630 = $3.02 per mile driven, so deadhead costs $0.44 a mile in rate
Frequently asked questions
What is a good deadhead percentage for trucking?
Many fleets target under 10-15% deadhead, though it varies by lane and equipment type. The lower the better, since deadhead miles burn fuel and time with no revenue.
What is the difference between quoted rate and effective rate?
The quoted rate is revenue divided by loaded miles only, which is how brokers usually post a load. The effective rate is revenue divided by total miles including deadhead, which is what you actually earn per mile driven.
How can I reduce deadhead miles?
Plan your next load before the current one delivers, work with a dispatcher who plans lanes around your position, and avoid areas with little return freight unless the rate accounts for it.
